Charitable Gift Planning:
Net Income “Make-up” Charitable Unitrust offers wealthy individuals significant tax savings on highly appreciated but low income-producing assets. A Net Income “Make-up” Charitable remainder Unitrust (NIMCRUT) can be a great income and estate planning tool for wealthy clients, particularly those with philanthropic interests and who also have an interest in selling highly appreciated assets (i.e., real estate or closely-held stock) that produce little or no income.
As a split-interest trust, NIMCRUTs have become popular as a charitable giving technique because of the tax advantages they offer to both the donor and the charity. In addition, life insurance is often used in conjunction with the NIMCRUT as a means to preserve the inheritances of the donor’s heirs by replacing the value of the highly appreciated assets being donated to the charity with policy proceeds held in an ILIT.
